What do robots have to do with contemporary art? “Nothing at all! Popular literature and cinema - that's where they belong”, - the majority of experts will answer with convincing indifference in their eyes. Very few contemporary art critics will take seriously the question itself. That will not prevent us in just one lecture to understand and make sure that robotic art is one of the brightest pages in the development of art of the twentieth century, and contemporary art cannot be imagined without the experiments of techno-avant-garde artists. We will discuss the designs and aesthetics of robotic sculpture of the 1950s and 1960s, the cybernetic inspiration of "artificial life" and the role of artistic practices in shaping modern social robotics.
Dmitry Galkin is a researcher and theorist of digital culture, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor at the Institute of Arts and Culture at the National Research Tomsk State University, curator of the Siberian branch of the NCCA, author of the book Digital Culture: Horizons of Artificial Life (2013).
